As one of its objectives The Arts Society, aims to inspire young people with lasting enthusiasm for the arts and an awareness of our arts heritage and its conservation. To this end Upper Thames makes an annual grant to support young artists. Here are some of the more recent projects we have helped.
In 2017/18 We donated £700 to Commonweal School to fund the frames and other display material for an exhibition of 6th form 'A' level examination work. We also donated £500 to fund an artist and the materials to help long stay very unwell children in the GWH create friezes in recognition of the 'PAT' dogs who they knew.
2018/19 provided another target for our help. There are some 900 registered young carers in Swindon and we launched a photography competition just for them. The winners received modest prizes but more especially had their pictures framed and exhibited.
In 2019/20 we started a project giving Clarinet taster lessons to year 5 students at Longcot School. Also,as a result of the Covid 19 Pandemic we are also sponsoring prizes in year groups for young carers and students in home schooling to produce something inspirational which will uplift us in these difficult times. It could be a poem, song, a written piece, something artistic; anything to impress and inspire. Judging will be in June 2020
Now in 2020/21 we are funding a 'Meet the Artist' project with Swindon Museum & Gallery. This will be a series of interviews with artists whose work is held in the Swindon Collection, which will be sent out to schools and colleges to support on-line learning when schools are unable to visit the Gallery itself.
The project should have several benefits: it will promote awareness of the collection with young people and then help them understand routes into the visual arts if they chose them as a career. It will also have a useful legacy in supporting the Gallery to better understand and interpret it's collection.
UPDATE 7th June 2021 The project is now launched and five out the final total of eight interviews with artists can be seen on the Museum Youtube Channel and website for all to see. The five are John Greenwood, Desmond Morris, Simon Carter, David Bent and Sarah Purvey. The final interviews will be taking place soon and the promotion of the initiative will commence in schools this Autumn. There are currently 15 partner schools involved and it is hoped to increase this number.
Clips from the videos have formed part of some of the first workshops that have been delivered to schools. It is pleasing to know that feedback from schools and pupils has been really positive.
We are asked to follow the ever evolving information on social media channels and re-post and share the posts with our followers to expand the understanding of the project. In this way, plus local media coverage, the project will hopefully gain even more support. Links to social media are Instagram- @swindongalleryartontour Facebook- @artontour2020 Twitter- @AoTSwindon
